The papers contain typed and handwritten correspondence from the law firm of Ira Colby and Son, Claremont, N.H., also correspondence between Ira Colby, Jr., his son Ira G. Colby, III, ("Don", Dartmouth 1894) and various clients, law firms, courts, and businesses in New England. The Colby firm handled cases regarding wills, lands, and bill collection. Also contains correspondence with family and friends concerning Dartmouth College and teaching posts Ira Colby, Jr., held in Mass. and N.H. Other materials include diaries for 1850, 1882, and 1885-86; alumni correspondence with Dartmouth College; and correspondence of Louise M. Colby with her sister Lucy A. Holt, 1883-1890.

The celebration of the 150th anniversary of the decision of the U.S. Supreme Court in the Dartmouth College Case was held on April 9, 1969, in the Court of Claims, Washington, D.C.; the celebration also commemorated the career of Daniel Webster, the advocate who defended the case before the Supreme Court. During the ceremony Justice Earl Warren, Senator Thomas J. MacIntyre, and Dartmouth College President John Sloan Dickey spoke before an audience of legislators, jurists, historians, and alumni....

Ira Colby was born in Claremont, New Hampshire on Jan. 11, 1831, the son of a successful farmer. He graduated from Dartmouth College in 1857, read law at a N.H. law firm, and was admitted to the N.H. bar in 1860. His law firm was among the most prominent in New Hampshire during the late 1800s.
